The sign making business is an ancient profession. It probably started not long after man populated the earth and he needed to mark or identify his possessions for others to know whose stuff was whose. You’ve probably seen pictures of carvings on the tomb walls at the Egyptian pyramids. The ancient scrolls were written with beautiful hand writing and illustrations. These had to be done by sign men.
Michelangelo used a technique where he would draw on paper his artwork and make a “pounce” pattern. He would perforate the lines on the drawing, place the pattern in the position where he wanted to paint, take powdered charcoal in a cloth pounce bag and pat the pattern. The charcoal would go through the perforations and transfer the drawing to the substrate. They have actually found his used pounce patterns in the Sistine Chapel. This old technique has been used by sign people for hundreds of years.
